The goal of our Sowing Well-Being program is to improve the overall quality of life of individuals through the use of a variety of plant material.
FNE International’s gardening program encompasses all types of planted spaces including community gardens, edible gardens, sensory gardens, and healing spaces to improve the wellbeing of the individuals who use or visit these places.
This focus on the individual’s overall health encourages positive interactions with plants, creating environments that feed but also ones that reduce stress and anxiety, complement physical wellness, and teach responsibility, self-care, and the care of others.
How do planted spaces sow well-being?
Community Spaces provide comfortable meeting, retreat and play places for individuals, friends and families. These spaces provide an escape from daily stresses and can have rejuvenative effects. They allow children a safe place to play, explore, and develop creativity. Involving the community in the planning, development and care of these gardens, develops a sense of ownership, pride and responsibility for the positive changes they are making within their community.
Sensory or Healing gardens fulfill physical and mental therapeutic needs in a safe environment where children and adults are encouraged to touch, smell, explore and care for the garden. These interactions develop creativity, improve fine and gross motor skills, provide a motivation for learning as well as help re-direct anger and frustration.Edible gardens support healthy eating and can provide food security for families. Our home garden program focuses on working with local families and community members to increase diet diversity and nutrition by expanding the accessibility of seed and plant material in addition to improving plant growing practices and techniques. By providing a variety of food crops with high vitamin and mineral content, including traditional and nontraditional options, we hope to increase the diversity and nutritional value of the foods available to each family.
Reforestation improves the health of the environment by moderating temperatures, reducing soil erosion, sun glare, and noise pollution, and purifying the air.
All garden designs and installations incorporate biointensive, permaculture, and organic gardening methods. These approaches focus on plant selection, plant placement, companion planting, crop rotation, eliminating chemical inputs, and improving soil structure and fertility. Through the use of these techniques, we can reduce soil erosion, and increase plant health and garden yields.
We believe the benefit of gardens goes beyond helping to feed families; gardens can improve the wellbeing of all individuals as they are spaces that increase the physical and mental health of individuals and communities.
